The Division of Energy (DIEN) conducts research, studies, services and consulting of specialized technology in the areas of energy efficiency, use of domestic gas technologies, alternative sources, fuels/biofuels and energy and environmental planning.
The area of energy efficiency develops energy diagnostic services through its Gas and Energy Laboratory (Lagen), comprising energy balances, tests on equipment and thermal and/or electric processes, in order to point out measures for the efficient use of energy. This laboratory also carries out tests to determine the energy efficiency and safety assessment of water heaters and gas stoves, within the Brazilian Labeling Program (PBE). Other than that, the Laboratory also operates in the characterization of combustible gases derived from biomass, landfill and others, aimed at structuring projects of electricity generation, heat or mitigation of emissions of greenhouse gases.
The Fuels and Lubricants Laboratory (LACOL) develops researches and tests in accordance with standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), towards the petroleum derived fuels and biofuels. Currently the work on biodiesel is the "flagship" and fully meets the tests required by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). LACOL also provides counseling and technical consultancy to the productive sector in order to ensure product quality and reduce costs in manufacturing processes. The laboratory also develops research on the energy use of other biomass, particularly agricultural waste, and counts with pilot plants with reactors of 20, 50 and 100 liters.
From biomass, the Microalgae Biotechnology Laboratory (LABIM) develops studies for the technical and economic feasibility of producing microalgae derived biomass for generating biofuels. The laboratory studies the cultivation of freshwater and marine microalgae, aiming to optimize productivity in biomass and oil; experiments to optimize the methods of separation of biomass, quantification of total lipids and others; as well as evaluates the manufacturing of products of high commercial value. This sector also counts on a pilot plant for the production of microalgae biomass of 30,000 liters for cultivation of about 30 kg of dry biomass per month.
In the field of energy planning, DIEN performs sectoral and/or regional studies on energy use, alternative energy sources, carbon emissions and other issues, including the development of models and scenario studies. It also studies the state of the art technologies and ratings for the implementation of renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass power.
