The Biocatalysis Laboratory (LABIC/DCAP) is dedicated to research lines related to the enzymatic or microbiological conversion of renewable substrates into biofuels and bioproducts. Among the most widely studied raw materials, lignocellulosic biomass and oilseeds and their processing by-products are of major importance. The Lab provides the infrastructure necessary to characterize different types of biomass and to develop or optimize steps of the lignocellulosic biomass processing, such as pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and enzyme production. It also has experience in hydrogen production via fermentation utilizing different Brazilian agro-industrial and urban waste. Moreover, it has tradition in biological degradation of xenobiotic compounds such as herbicides used on crops of great economic importance in Brazil. With these RD&I activities, the Lab aims to develop sustainable biotechnological processes with low environmental impact.
